Thanks Markham for jis explanation of his work and will use it in his talks; defends bad gossip because Markham was paid $450 for his ballad; mentions that he also made reference in his talks to "The City of Dreadful Night" and "Christ in Hades."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
